Originating as a colonial settlement in the 17th century, Stony Brook played a vital role in the American Revolutionary War. The area's historical significance is embodied by the Stony Brook Grist Mill, a meticulously preserved landmark that dates back to 1751, and the Long Island Museum, a nine-acre museum displaying art, historical artifacts, and carriages. 
 
Today Stony Brook is designated as a hamlet/census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Brookhaven. Anchored by institutions such as The Stony Brook School, Stony Brook University, and Stony Brook Hospital - the area offers residents not only a community that’s steeped in history and natural beauty but also a destination filled with a wide variety of modern amenities.
